Sustainable Packaging as a Competitive Advantage

Ruth Stanat

Green Packaging is still a major issue despite the global recession among packaging executives. A study conducted by Packaging Digest in November 2008 found how important an issue is sustainable packaging and the direction of those trends.  The study found that importance of packaging is rising dramatically.

Why is packaging more important now?

The survey shows that the most important reason is the new demands of customers. Significantly, companies are noticing strategic advantages in green packaging, in terms of cost benefits against fluctuating costs of materials.

Many packaging executives need to balance packaging attributes such as price, design, size and branding.

The key sustainability factors on the minds of packaging executives over the next 5 years:

  1. Increasing energy and material costs
  2. Market share development
  3. Market creation
  4. Environmental & Economic issues
  5. Corporate sustainability initiatives
